Le he prendido fuego al bosque de mi casa esperando que todas las cosas inservibles, dolorosas y que no me dejan crecer ardan y se conviertan en una ceniza tan ligera que el simple aire de mi respiración cansada las aleje.

“La bicicleta es un deporte que para practicarlo no necesita uno de compañeros. Propio pues para misántropos, para orgullosos, para insociables de toda laya. El ciclista es un aprendiz de suicida. Entre los peligros que lo amenazan los menores no son para desestimarse: los perros, enemigos encarnizados de quien anda aprisay al desgaire; y los guardias que sin gran cortesía recuerdan disposiciones municipales quebrantadas involuntariamente. Desde que se han multiplicado los automóviles por nuestras calles, he perdido la admiración con que veía antes a los toreros y la he reservado para los aficionados a la bicicleta. En ella uno va como suspendido en el aire. Quien vuela en aeroplano se desliga del mundo. El que se desliza por su superficie sostenido en dos puntos de contacto no rompe amarras con el planeta. El avión y el auto no guardan proporción por su velocidad con el hombre, que es mayor de la que él necesita. No así la bicicleta. Raro deporte que se ejercita sentado como el remar. Todos los intentos para compartirlo con otros han sido frustrados. Lo exclusivo de su disfrute lo hace apreciable a los egoístas. Llegamos a profesarle sentimientos verdaderamente afectuosos. Adivinamos sus pequeños contratiempos, sus bajas necesidades de aire y aceite. Un leve chirrido en la biela o en el buje ilustra suficientemente nuestra solícita atención de hombres sensibles, comedidos, bien educados. Sé de quienes han extremado estos miramientos por su máquina, incurriendo en afecciones que sólo suelen despertar seres humanos. Las bicicletas también son útiles, discretas, económicas.”

Julia Esquivel
Julia Esquivel was an academic at San Carlos University, Guatemala, the Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano in Costa Rica and the Bossey Ecumenical Institute in Switzerland.Her poetry was heavily influenced by the Theology of Liberation. Author of seven books including two collections of poetry Threatened with Resurrection (1982) and The Certainty of Spring (1993).
In 1994 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bern for her poetry which the University noted "gave voice to the suffering of the Guatemalan people in her spiritual poetry." She died in Guatemala on the 19th July 2019.

ENG. It’s been a long October, it is the first time I finish an Inktober challenge and I feel very satisfied. I really like Inktober because on the one hand it is an exercise limited by one word, but on the other hand, you have all the freedom to draw anything (I mean anything!) that comes to your mind.
It is always a challenge to work on a daily illustration, especially at the level I would like to, but I’ve learned to relax, enjoy it and take it for what it is, just an exercise and even though I didn’t like all the drawings, I noticed how my hand got really loose and I’ll definitely make some pieces inspired by these sketches. I am very happy because of the evolution, specially in the creative aspect and really enjoyed using different types of strokes and inks. It is also the first time that I do the challenge with a friend and it is very nice to see the evolution of his drawing and to share our results, joys and frustrations. What a good Inktober! hopefully many more come. These are my inktober illustrations ñ______ñ
I think I’m going to make a 2020 Calendar with some of them.

ESP. Ha sido un Octubre largo, es la primera vez que termino un reto Inktober y me siento muy satisfecha. Realmente me gusta Inktober porque por un lado es un ejercicio limitado por una sola palabra, pero por otro lado, tienes toda la libertad de dibujar ¡cualquier cosa que se te ocurra!.
Siempre es un desafío trabajar en una ilustración diaria, especialmente al nivel que me gustaría, pero aprendí a relajarme, disfrutarlo y tomarlo como lo que es, solo un ejercicio y aunque no me gustaron todos los dibujos, noté cómo se iba soltando mi mano conforme iban pasando los días y definitivamente haré algunas piezas inspiradas en estos bocetos. Estoy muy contenta porque me gustó el resultado y la evolución, sobretodo en el aspecto creativo y disfruté mucho usar diferentes tipos de trazos y de tintas. También es la primera vez que hago el reto con un amigo y es my bonito ir viendo la evolución de su dibujo y poder compartir nuestros resultados, alegrías y frustraciones. ENG. For me, creating art for music albums is one of the most beautiful and inspiring things to do as an illustrator. It is a very fulfilling work that awakens creativity and gives the opportunity to listen to music from another perspective, paying attention to every single sound, trying to create some kind of bond.
This time I made the art for Crystal Beth’s first solo album named Push Thru. She’s a very talented musician and sensory artist from Seattle. It was great working with such a talented, hard worker, kind person.

ESP. Para mí, crear arte para discos es una de las cosas más hermosas e inspiradoras que puedo hacer como ilustradora. Es un trabajo que me llena de satisfacción, despierta mi creatividad y me brinda la oportunidad de escuchar música desde una perspectiva distinta, atenta a cada sonido e intentando crear algún tipo de lazo.
Esta vez hice el arte para el primer album solista de Crystal Beth, una música y artista sensorial súper talentosa de Seattle. Trabajar con una persona tan talentosa, trabajadora y amable, fue increíble.

Last night the show was full of amazing art, these are some of my favorite pieces: Meg Adamson, Violeta Hernandez, Jon Macnair, Diana Bama, Mike Sandoval, Youko Horiuchi.
ENG. This is the piece I made for the exhibition. The original art was made with ink on paper and then I made another version adding some color and texture for a unique print which fortunately found a new loving home last night.
I really enjoyed doing this painting because I had never done a tiger before and I usually tend to add color to my work, but this time I just wanted something that would enhance the line work. Of course I made a third version full of color (just because I love color) for limited edition prints that I will put on my Etsy shop soon.

ESP. Esta es la pieza que hice para la exposición. El original es en tinta sobre papel e hice otra versión agregando algo de color y textura para una impresión única que afortunadamente ayer encontró un nuevo y cariñoso hogar.
Disfruté mucho hacer este trabajo porque nunca había hecho tigres y porque siempre tiendo a poner color a todo, pero para la exposición quería algo simple que resaltara el trabajo de línea. Por supuesto, después hice una tercera versión a color para una edición limitada de impresiones que pronto subiré a mi tienda de Etsy.

ENG. Illustration and Character design is a complex process that requires a series of steps including a line of action, structure and gestural aspect and it’s affected by perspective, composition and lighting.
Despite being a complex process, it has been really enjoyable and satisfying to learn it from a great artist. On March I took an illustration course with Eduardo Rubio, a wonderful artist and illustrator, who also was my painting teacher in high school. Who would have thought that almost twenty years later I would take a course with someone who inspired me to take the artistic path? I wanted to talk more with him about his work, but being so introverted has always been an obstacle to approaching people I admire. Anyway ... it was a great workshop. I have been practicing a lot, and although I am still very attached to my old style, I have been doing exercises and previous studies for illustrations that I like a lot.

These are some of the exercises we did in the workshop. One of the things I liked the most was how simple they seem, but thinking about objects and bodies in different circumstances or different positions is more complex than it seems. These exercises are great not only to design characters, but also to give them life.

ESP. El diseño de personajes es un proceso complejo que requiere de una serie de pasos que incluyen una línea de acción, la estructura y por último el aspecto gestual sin olvidar tomar en cuenta la perspectiva, composición e iluminación.
A pesar de ser un proceso complejo, siempre resulta muy ameno y satisfactorio aprenderlo de un gran artista. En Marzo tomé un curso con Eduardo Rubio, un maravilloso artista e ilustrador, con quien también tomé el taller de pintura en la preparatoria. ¿Quién iba a pensar que casi veinte años después tomaría un curso con una de las personas que me inspiró a dedicarme a lo que más me gusta y apasiona? Me habría gustado platicar más con él acerca de su trabajo, pero ser tan introvertida siempre ha sido un obstáculo para acercarme a personas que admiro. En fin… fue un gran taller. He estado practicando mucho, y aunque sigo muy apegada al estilo que tenía, he estado haciendo ejercicios y estudios previos para ilustraciones que me han gustado mucho.

Estos son algunos de los ejercicios que realizamos en el taller. Una de las cosas que más me gustó fue lo sencillo que parecen, pero pensar los objetos y los cuerpos en diferentes circunstancias o distintas posiciones es más complejo de lo que parece. Estos ejercicios son buenísimos para diseñar personajes, darles vida y echar a andar la imaginación.

ENG. On July 20, Soultik presented their album called What does your heart say?, in which they combine the Tojolbal worldview with Soul music. It has really beautiful and strong songs with a very powerful voice that I heard for several days as inspiration to create the art of the album, but also helped me in a difficult moment of my life, a closing moment in which I felt like a castaway should feel when waking up on an island in the middle of nowhere. What does your heart say? they ask, just that I wondered every day when I got up and when I went to bed, but finally I listened to my heart.

ESP. Este 20 de Julio, Soultik presentó su disco llamado ¿Qué dice tu corazón?, en el que combina la ideología y cosmovisión Tojolabal con el Soul. Es un disco con temas muy bellos y fuertes cantados por una voz muy potente que escuché durante varios días como inspiración para crear el arte del disco, pero que también me sirvió en un momento difícil de mi vida, un cierre y el inicio de una nueva etapa en la que me sentía como debe sentirse un náufrago al despertar en una isla en medio de la nada. ¿Qué Dice tu Corazón? preguntan los chicos de Soultik, y justo eso me preguntaba cada día al levantarme y al acostarme, y finalmente lo escuché.

ENG. Last Friday I attended the IV International Colloquium of Fantastic Literature (UNAM) to listen to the illustrator I admire and enjoy the most: Santiago Caruso. For some reason, I had the great opportunity to get into auditorium full of people who admire their work to witness an intelligent, entertaining talk in which I found several reminders of the reasons why I illustrate and many answers to questions that I had been asking myself for a long time about art and illustration.
I left the place with a wide smile and a wonderful book that I couldn’t find anywhere: his art book Dark Matter, which is a true treasure and a gift from a person whom I love deeply and has been by my side in a key moment of my life.
Sometimes life has beautiful ways to teach, to remind us of our purpose and enjoy the moment; this trip and the words of this great artist are a great example.
In a dark life that in itself is beautiful, this day was a shooting star.

ESP. El viernes asistí al IV Coloquio Internacional de Literatura Fantástica de la UNAM para escuchar al ilustrador que más admiro y disfruto. Por alguna razón, tuve la gran oportunidad de entrar a un auditorio repleto de personas que admiran su trabajo a escuchar una charla inteligente, amena y en la que encontré varias advertencias de las razones por las que ilustro y muchas respuestas a preguntas que llevaba tiempo haciéndome acerca del arte y la ilustración.
De esta charla salí con una sonrisa amplia y un libro maravilloso que tenía tiempo tratando de encontrar: su libro Materia Oscura, que además de ser un verdadero tesoro, fue un regalo de una persona a la que amo profundamente y me ha acompañado en una etapa clave de mi vida.
A veces la vida tiene maneras hermosas de enseñar, de recordarnos nuestro propósito y de hacerse disfrutar. Este viaje y las palabras de este gran artista son un ejemplo.
En una vida oscura que de por sí es bella, este día fue una estrella fugaz.
