Celebrating Ramón López Velarde

Google invited me to illustrate a Doodle to celebrate
the Mexican poet Ramón López Velarde.

I was inspired by the writer's poems and his context, but tried to make an interpretation through nature of what life meant to him with all its nuances, its luminosity and its darkness. In this Doodle, I included elements mentioned in one of his most important poems La Suave Patria, like dahlias, which are the national flowers of Mexico, nopales, a mexican woodpecker and hummingbirds. The theme of love and women as his constant inspiration are also reflected in this doodle.

Here’s a bit of the process to make the illustration (sketches).

To honor the Mexican poet, Google presented this Doodle at the Complejo Cultural Los Pinos, where a conversatory was held with the brilliant poets Isabel Zapata, Clyo Mendoza and Karen Villeda, who spoke about the presence of women in poetry and highlighted the current role of women in Mexican poetry.

Cuando la vida humana se disuelve, es muy confuso para las almas comprender que ya no forman parte del mundo material, por eso hay una criatura femenina mitad vida y mitad muerte que se encarga de explicarles que han llegado a un lugar nuevo.

La capacidad que ella tiene de navegar entre la vida y la muerte se la debe al fuego y ese fuego es alimentado por las lágrimas que los vivos le lloran a sus muertos. Ese mismo fuego disuelve el dolor humano y enciende una pequeña flama en el corazón de quien recuerda con amor a los que han partido. Por eso para ella es tan importante que los muertos sigan siendo recordados y cada año acompaña a todas las almas a visitar a sus seres queridos, el único día en el que nos desprendemos de nuestro cuerpo y nos convertimos en fuego para celebrar con ellos.

En México ponemos altares con comida, bebida, libros, pasatiempos, flores y encendemos velas para mostrarles el camino hacia nosotros y que sepan dónde están los corazones de las personas que los esperan.

Después del festejo entre vivos y muertos, en el alba, ella los guía de regreso y una vez que llegan, para evitar el sufrimiento de esas almas, apaga el fuego con sus propias lágrimas y los deja descansar hasta que el siguiente año alguien encienda la primera vela.

ENG. One of my favorite projects this year is the illustration I did for Marea Negra Cold Brew. Coffee is my favorite drink and I always wanted to illustrate something related to it, its processes or rituals.

Marea Negra is a cold brew brand and I wanted the illustration to show in a simple, beautiful way, the process of making cold brew coffee.

ESP. Uno de mis trabajos favoritos de este año es la ilustración que hice para Marea Negra Cold Brew. El café es mi bebida favorita y siempre quise ilustrar algo relacionado con él, sus procesos o rituales.

Marea Negra es una marca de cold brew, por lo que el objetivo de la ilustración era mostrar de una manera sencilla y hermosa, el proceso para hacer el cold brew.

”Spoke Art NSFW, a group exhibition featuring over 40 femme artists exploring sex and sexuality. This dynamic array of artists displays a complex spectrum of experiences from introspective and intimate to playful and defiant. 

Returning for its third iteration the exhibition explores and expands on what it means to be a sexual femme presenting person today. Including a wide variety of media such as painting, drawing, embroidery and ceramics, each artist presents facets of sexuality from the feminine viewpoint. The exhibition seeks to celebrate the ever shifting and multi-dimensional experience of each artist from soft sensuality to frank brashness.

Each piece delves into the complexity of femme sexuality, not as a definitive narrative, but as a larger conversation. Giving voice to artists across the spectrum of gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, racial background and experiences, the exhibition explores how each artist relates to their own sexuality.”

ENG. This month I had the opportunity to make an illustration for the children's section of Km Cero magazine, a cultural magazine about Mexico City. For this edition I illustrated the legend of "La Planchada", one of the most famous legends of the city originated in the Juárez Hospital. This is the legend:

A kind ghost in Mexico City

They say that Eulalia sees some patients at night. She gives them their medicine, accompanies them gently and tells them her love story.

When she was young, she met a doctor with whom she fell in love, but a few days before marrying him, he married another woman. Heartbroken, Eulalia, the beautiful nurse with the always well-pressed uniform, fell ill to death.

Since then, she has been lovingly strolling through the corridors of the Juarez hospital and, when in the morning some of the patients ask for the kind young lady who helped them the night before, the doctors reply, “Oh, no! she was “La Planchada”, a nurse who died a century ago…”.

ESP. Este mes tuve la oportunidad de hacer una ilustración para la sección infantil de la revista Km Cero, una revista cultural acerca del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México. Para esta edición ilustré la leyenda de “La Planchada”, una de las leyendas más famosas de la ciudad y cuyo origen es el Hospital Juárez. La leyenda dice así:

Dicen que Eulalia atiende por las noches a algunos pacientes. Les da sus medicinas, los acompaña con dulzura y les cuenta su historia de desamor.

Cuando joven, conoció un médico del cual se enamoró, pero, unos días antes de casarse con él, se enteró de que el muy pérfido se había ido a casar con otra mujer. Con el corazón roto, Eulalia, la enferemera hermosa del uniforme siempre bien planchado, cayó enferma hasta morir. 

Desde entonces, se pasea amorosamente por los pasillos del hospital Juárez y, cuando por la mañana alguno de los enfermos pregunta por la amable señorita que lo ayudó la noche anterior, le responden los médicos “¡Ah, no! A usted lo vino a visitar la Planchada, una enfermera que murió hace un siglo…”.

Julia Esquivel

Julia Esquivel was an academic at San Carlos University, Guatemala, the Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano in Costa Rica and the Bossey Ecumenical Institute in Switzerland.Her poetry was heavily influenced by the Theology of Liberation. Author of seven books including two collections of poetry Threatened with Resurrection (1982) and The Certainty of Spring (1993).

In 1994 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bern for her poetry which the University noted "gave voice to the suffering of the Guatemalan people in her spiritual poetry." She died in Guatemala on the 19th July 2019.

The Monster Project 2019

ENG. I am very happy because The Monster Project gave me the opportunity to be part of this year’s edition.  The Monster Project teaches children about the power of their own imagination and encourages them to pursue their creative potential collaborating with artists from all over the world. The children draw monsters, and then the artists recreate them in their own styles.

This illustration was a bit of a challenge 'cause I wanted to stay true to the original idea, but also really fun and easy to make an interpretation and my own version of this interesting monster, to imagine it’s personality, colors and textures. I hope you like both versions of the monster. You can see the other amazing artworks on The Monster Project website.

ESP. Estoy muy contenta porque The Monster Project me invitó a ser parte del proyecto de este año. Ellos les enseñan a los niños acerca del poder de la imaginación y los anima a explotar su potencial creativo con la colaboración de artistas de todo el mundo. Los niños dibujan monstruos y luego cada artista hace una interpretación con su estilo propio.

Esta ilustración fue un reto para mí porque quería ser fiel a la idea original, pero al mismo tiempo fue divertido hacer mi propia interpretación de este monstruo tan interesante, imaginar su personalidad, sus colores y texturas. Aquí están ambas versiones, espero que les gusten. Pueden ver el increíble trabajo de los otros artistas en la página de The Monster Project.
